How You Can Help
Misunderstood is a 100% volunteer organization. We rely on our volunteers and donors to help make the rescue, fostering, healing, training and finally; the adoptions of the bully dogs that we save, a success. We do not have a shelter and rely on our foster parents to shelter, love, feed, train, transport and help the dogs. We rely on those willing to donate to help the cause. A few dollars might not seem like much, but sometimes, it can be the difference in a dog's life.
A one-time donation or a monthly donation is a simple way to do a lot of good. Your generous contribution will help us save countless pit bulls from frightening cruelty and neglect. Below are some examples of how various donation amounts will help. All donations to Misunderstood are tax-deductible. We greatly appreciate all donations, no matter the size.
General Fund
Many of Misunderstood's income is from the summer months when there are a large number of adoption events. Rescuing Pit Bulls though is not only a summer job; dogs need our help year-round! Our adoption fee does not always cover the cost associated with rescuing and rehabilitating our dogs. A small monthly donation gives us a steady stream of income so we can cover our administrative costs and ensure that all the money from adoption fees goes directly to help our dogs.
Foster Fund
Misunderstood is 100% foster-home based. Our dogs are with us for an average of 3 months and none ever stay in a kennel or boarding facility. But being completely foster-based means that we are dependant on the open arms of our wonderful foster homes. Since fostering is a big enough responsibility by itself, Misunderstood pays all the costs associated with fostering. This includes food, regular medical care, treats, toys, grooming, carpet cleaning. Your donation to the Foster Fund will help our wonderful fosters care for all our dogs and help us rescue more needy dogs.
Here's how your donation to the Foster Fund could help:
- $5 pays for one toy or bag of treats
- $25 pays for a collar and leash or harness
- $50 pays for regular vet exam and vaccinations
- $75 pays for a 3 month supply of dry dog food
- $100 pays for a spay/neuter
Emergency Medical Fund
Often the dogs we take in have been severely neglected and are either ill or have serious physical injuries. Also dogs sometimes come down with illnesses due to their proximity to other rescue dogs. This fund helps cover our medical expenses dealing with these special cases.
Here's how your donation to the Emergency Medical Fund could help:
- $20 pays for a heartworm test
-$50 pays for medications
- $250 pays for treatment of one dog with heartworm
Adoption Fund
Adoptions are Misunderstood's bread and butter; the vast majority of our dogs find forever homes through adoption events. But attending these important events means we have to be able to transport the dogs to and from events, afford the food, cleaning supplies, flyers and other supplies (not to mention the fee some events charge to participate!). Donations to this fund will help us ensure that the largest number of dogs get to the largest numbers of events and, therefore, find the largest amount of forever homes.
Education Fund
One of Misunderstood's primary goals is to community education about pit bulls. To that end, we require all our adopters to take a Pit Bull 101 class and 7-week basic obedience course — both free of charge. We also strongly encourage our volunteers to attend classes and seminars to learn more about how to improve our adoption process. Donations to this fund will enable us to pursue educational opportunities to better serve our dogs, adopters, and community.

Misunderstood is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are tax-deductible. If your employer has a program to match chartible donations, please inform them of your donation to Misunderstood Pit Bull Rescue and ask that they add us to their list of approved charitable organizations.
